Swedish pop singer Sophia Somajo is probably mostly known to pop heads for co-writing Robyn's "Time Machine" together with Max Martin, Shellback, Robyn and Klas Ahlund. The song is a not-so subtle nod to the first Back To The Future movie that inspired Somajo to write the lyrics after seeing the movie over and over again when she was at home sick one day. (Now that "Delorean" reference makes a lot more sense.)
Somajo is currently recording tracks for her big label debut, and she shared her first single "Chinese Tekkno" without a lot of fanfare in Sweden last year to test the waters.
Combined with a strong visual aesthetic, "Chinese Tekkno" is a proper introduction to Somajo's distinct point of view that is inspired by a futuristic world, technology, science fiction and a far east movement that is setting the tone. Lyrics like "I like my Hong Kong poppin' in a bottle of noodles," sum it up nicely.
The song is a progressive, unorthodox pop tune with jagged synths and distorted vocal effects that is nothing like the gentle pop we have come to expect from Sweden. Cool, eclectic with a whole lot of crunch. Somajo is a hot new talent with a vision to bring a fresh new perspective to scene. Can't wait to hear what she does next.
