Paloma Faith's "Stone Cold Sober" is just the surprise gem of the summer we have been waiting for. And doesn't the singer look fabulous?
At first listen, Palomo may seem just another retro singer who is riding the coattails of singers like Amy Winehouse and Duffy, but the truth is that Paloma serves up a whole lot more spunk and a distinct sound of her own
Combining both massive style and substance, her burlesque, "vampish," soulful pop is more like "Björk meets Róisín Murphy while possessed by the ghost of Billie Holiday," as The Guardian put it appropriately.
Much of her style is inspired by a sense of nostalgia. "There are elements of hope in old things because they were born out of periods of struggle where hope was all people had," she says in an interview. "The thing about old music is that it transcends time. Timelessness is the essence of good art."
"Stone Cold Sober" puts her style and persona in perspective. "I can be wilder than the wind, 119 miles an hour, I'm in a whole other dimension," she sings. "Dancing doubles on the floor. You think I'm crazy, a little bit hazy but I'm stone cold sober."
"Stone Cold Sober" is available in British download stores now. Check out the amazing video of the song below that was directed by famed Sophie Muller. Very good. (And click here to see the amazing single cover art..)
