Once in a rare while I receive a note from an artist that just stands out from the 200+ others that I receive everyday from PR peeps and other music folks. Let me just quote part of the email and give mnek the chance to introduce himself - unfiltered:
"My name is mnek (pronounced as so m-n-e-k); in lowercase, because it looks cooler LOL I’m 14 years-old and I’m a singer-songwriter/producer from South East London, England (. . .) I’m unsigned so there’s none of that press release bullshit. I’ve been writing since I was 8 years old and since then I’ve kinda progressed."
"I’m inspired by Calvin Harris, Sam Sparro, Lady Gaga, Mariah Carey, Beyonce, Whitney Houston, Usher, Anita Baker and loads others.. I would like to think my main genre is electropop. I wanted to separate myself from likes of your Chris Brown’s and your Ne-Yo’s, because they are all Black Men, who do R&B. I wanted to prove that us Black Musicians can deliver something fresh and different than your ordinary 'take your shirt off and dance like Michael Jackson" affairs."
He sure has a good sense of humor, and he is a great talent in the making as well. Check out two tracks from mnek, "If Truth Be Told" and "Devil In Pumps (She Dips)." These two demo tracks show that he has the vocal chops, the soundboard savvy and a knack for melody that may take him places.
