NYT About Madonna: "Material Woman, Restoring Her Brand"

Check out a very favorable review of Madonna's "Hard Candy" in The New York Times today.

In his closing arguments, writer Jon Parales concludes, "'Hard Candy' is a retrenchment, but it’s a typically savvy one. The dance floor — not the pulpit, not the art gallery — is Madonna’s truest home, and it’s a good place to shake off pretensions and excesses. Her grand statement on 'Hard Candy' is nothing more than that she’s still around and can still deliver neat, calculated pop songs. Madonna has had more profound moments — 'Like a Prayer,' 'Ray of Light' — but not every pop star is cut out for full-time profundity. This time around, concocting new ditties that will have her arena audiences singing along, she was smart to stay shallow."

Listen to Jamie Liddell "Wait For Me"

British crooner Jamie Lidell rings in the weekend by posting a brand-new track from his upcoming new album "Jim" on MySpace. The song is called "Wait For Me" and if this sun-splashed soul-pop stomper is a good indication of the rest of this new Lidell LP then we're in for a treat. "Jim" will be released in the U.S. and Europe next week. (Click here to pre-order "Jim" on Amazon.com)

Recorded in Berlin, Los Angeles and Paris, Lidell once again hooks up with producers Mocky and Gonzales to polish his raw ideas and turn them into a collection of catchy, hit-worthy songs. A press release describes "Jim" as an album that "will switch you on in the morning, move you on the dance-floor and take you down in the small hours. It's a bold, promiscuously diverse album, mixing up gospel grooves, sweetly sung and fiercely passionate soul, delicately moving ballads, thumping early R & B, synthed-up disco, and even a touch of "hillbilly funk.'" Sounds like a winner to me.

Lidell adds in the statement, "The most important thing was the vocal, to capture the balance of me delivering the songs with full gusto, and at the same time retaining the grain and the grit."

If you like Lidell's quirky, soul-laden sound, I also highly recommend his new single "Little Bit Of Feel Good," and specifically the sleek  Senior Coconut remix of that song that is available on iTunes.

Video Premiere: Kenna "Out Of Control"

Check out the video for Kenna's new U.K. single "Out Of Control" that will be releaed on April 28. Kenna hasn't been able to gain any traction with his music in the U.S. unfortunately, but things are faring a little better overseas. The Ethiopian-born singer is currently touring in Europe and will be joining Mark Ronson on tour in the next few week, which will surely make him some new fans. Kenna's production pal Chad Hugo (from the The Neptunes, N.E.R.D) makes a cameo in this new video. Scroll to 00:20,01:20 and to the end to see him appear.

Video Premiere: Boogaloo Stu "Magnetic Heart"

Some people just never get enough of the '80s. And as far as I'm concerned that's a good thing. Check out the video for "Magnetic Heart," a dazzling ditty by London-based electro glamour puss Boogaloo Stu.  It's a little Human League, a little Roxy Music and a whole lotta synth hotness. The song is taken from his new album "Enough About You...Let’s Talk About Me" and will be released as a single on April 30.
