Every circus has its clown. And this season of America Idol has Sanjay Malakar. In an utterly brilliant move, he totally played the part last night and went totally over the top with his faux-hawk hairdo. His bizarre appearance distracted viewers from his below-mediocre singing ability and poor stage presence. It even left Simon Cowell speechless.
Sanjaya will surely get plenty of votes to stay in the competition that will, in turn, outrage many people. But since when is American Idol a singing competition? This reality TV show is a popularity contest and Sanjaya seems to understand that perfectly. I'm rooting for Sanjaya to get ahead not just because he has the guts to stand out, but also because he exposes the farce that American Idol really is.
