Hot New Talent Alert: Kate Havnevik

Fans of Imogen Heap and Frou Frou pay attention. Norwegian songstress Kate Havnevik is finally releasing her debut album "Melankton" in Europe on September 18th. The LP will be released on her own record label, Continentica Records, and distributed by the big guys at Universal. However, the entire album is already available on iTunes now.

Kate mixes mesmerizing melodies with an electronic-based instrumentation to create a breathtaking sonic landscape. Vocally, her crooning is reminiscent of Imogen, Dido and even Bjork. Comparisons to Imogen should come as no surprise as  "Melankton" was produced by famed songwriter/producer Guy Sigsworth. Yes, the same guy that made up Frou Frou together with Imogen. It is interesting to notice that he applied some of the same production tricks to Kate as he did in the past to Frou Frou. From melodic stylings to her vocal inflection.

Some of you might already have gotten a taste of Kate in the past. She sang lead vocals on Royksopp's "Only This Moment." In the fall, an acapella version of her first single "Unlike Me" will be featured on the new Grey Anatomy soundtrack. Arjan Writes fave Temposhark is currently working on remixes of the single.

Download two of Kate's earlier, unreleased tracks straight from her web site to get a taste for her music. If you preview her Sigsworth-produced album on iTunes make sure to listen to the gorgeous "Sleepless." Highly recommended. (Click here to download "Melankton" from iTunes.)

I've had the Melankton cd for a few weeks now (thanks to eBay) and it is a decent record, but nowhere near as good as Imogen Heap or Frou Frou. My favourite track is "You Again".
