More Gwen Stefani Harajuku Girls

I wrote earlier about how Gwen Stefani's music and L.A.M.B. fashion is inspired by the style of Harajuku girls in Tokyo's vibrant Harajuku district. I found a great Flickr photostream by CherryVega with some great images of real-life Harajuku girls.

On "Harjuku Girls" (produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis) Stefani sings,  "In a pedestrian paradise. Where the catwalk got its claws. A subculture in a kaleidoscope of fashion.  Prowl the streets of Harajuku (. . .) Putting on a show , when you dress up in your clothes, wild hair color and cell phones, your accessories are dead on. Harajuku girls you got the wicked style. I like the way that you are. I am your biggest fan." (Click here to purchase Gwen Stefani's "Love Angel Music Baby" at Amazon.)

I think that trend is really awsome and different. It is very original and the best thing about the harajuku style is that there are a million different ways you can dress and look.

*Sigh* Gwen doesn't get it. She just took something cool from overseas, stripped it of all its meaning, and dumped the remains of it on our shores. She can't even pronounce the word correctly. It's Ha-ra-ju-ku, not Hairy-ju-ku.

Posted by: Däch at Feb 10, 2005 11:49:02 AM

Codose to Gwen. I think brought something cool from overseas and brought it over here. I dont think she stripped harajuku from all it's meaning. What are u talkin about "no name"? Neway i hope the harajuku style can start here cause i wanna have some harajuku in my style.

Posted by: punksta at Feb 11, 2005 9:44:08 PM

sorry "no name" i meant "dash". my bad.

I think I love the style and I guess it's not really my place to dictate what people do and don't wear. Half the goths in the world don't even follow the religion. I think it's fun, but I really doubt she cares about undertsnading it. She's always been forward in her style, yanno?

I was in Harajuku just yesterday. I posted some pix my friend and I took on my blog. http://www.xanga.com/glowingstar71

The song's lyrics are aight, but I think it maybe needs a remixing. And, yah, why does Gwen mispronounce Harajuku?? Hmmm....

i think that gwen is a freakin' genius! harajuku is so genuine and for us to have their fashion in the states is so...awesome. i would pick up the trend if my mom allowed me to dress like them!!

Posted by: JB at Feb 16, 2005 1:51:16 PM

Harajuku girls just looks like punk chicks to me, I am not that impressed. It just looks like western influence in Japan, I dressed like this when I was in junior high. Just like every other goth or rave freak you can find in any town of America.

I luv gwen so i really doesnt matter what she is singing about...i just think her music rocks.

Posted by: at Feb 25, 2005 6:05:46 PM

gwen isnt a posser you f-ing retard. if she was a posser.. that would make all of us possers too. thats a fact. i.e- i know anyoneee who really liked what another person was wearing alottttt.. they would go get it asap if they had the money on them. you cant really say thats possing. clothes arent made for one specific person. she is all about style. it isnt like her to like other peoples clothing but it just so happens this time she has. shes always been unique. obsessin over harajuku girls crap isnt making her a posser. if anything it is still making her one of a kind. this is united states. we'll eventually need an upgrade in clothes. i mean our trends die out quick. shes just bringin something different here. i think that hara. girls would actually like that gwen likes their style. ya know. but if you cant appreciate it. screw you.

Harajuka not like American punks or Goths. Japanese way more uptight. Didnt even know what the hell Gwen was singing about but the search I did lead me to that info. Gwen and the Harajuka way cool.

Posted by: lora at Mar 23, 2005 5:01:30 AM

I love those kind of fashion and sometimes I dress like that, but the thing is now days, if an asian girl dress that way, they get bagged and put down as "tb" or teeny boppers.. and it's a very big insult.. but hrrm..

Posted by: at Mar 26, 2005 8:09:28 PM

the harajuku style isnt something anyone can exploit and just use for commercializing...i dont think anyone can be part of it if they werent even japanese...
but what i dont understand is...
why is everyone getting so freaking pissed off about this? bet more than half of you havent even been to tokyo. its so much more than those photos. its something you have to see for yourself...but not just talk about or copy. im glad gwen stefani appriciates the harakuju style but she shouldnt act like shes the first person on the planet to discover something awesome and start advertising how "orginal" she is -_- i bet most of you are more orginal than her...with or without the "harakuju girls"
anyway ciao
ps. go to tokyo its truly awesome (:
