Pop Crooner Matthew Koma Releases New Single 'One Night' [Review]
Matthew Koma is without a doubt one of the most exciting new talents in pop music to keep your eyes (and ears) on this year. Following the release of his debut EP last year, the crooner is gearing up to unveil his full-length debut album, entitled "Arcadia," later this year. The first single taken from that record is the single "One Night" that premiered on Cherrytree Radio last week and is now available on iTunes for everyone to enjoy. (On a related sidenote, "One Night" should not be confused with Koma's "One" that he recorded over a year ago.)
Like I wrote before, Koma is an astute songwriting talent who is a savvy observer of life and has an incredible knack for melody. Whether it's a soaring vocal hook of an explosive dance tune or a touching pop ballad, Koma is a modern-day, genre-bending troubadour who knows exactly how to dose the emotional intensity in his music and deliver it with finesse and heartfelt gusto. It should come as no surprise that top EDM maestros like Zedd ("Spectrum") and Alesso ("Years") collaborated with Koma to add a potent melodic hook to their dance productions.
Inspired by classic singer/songwriters like Bruce Springsteen and Elvis Costello, Koma has a very distinct point of view when it comes to songwriting. "I write about things that I know are sincere and that I can speak about from a real place," he told me last year. "I feel that's really the only way for me to connect with people. [Music] needs to come from an honest place. Songwriting is an honest process for me so it is very reflective of what I'm going through in that moment, experiencing or seeing."
"One Night" is a perfect example of Koma's expert songwriting savvy. Introduced by the whimsical sound of a xylophone, the song tells the playful tale of a one night stand gone sour with breezy yet biting lyrics that show off Koma's clever storytelling. "You make casual messy/And all materials possess you like a slave/Don't take this swim for more then it is," Koma croons before "One Night" propels into its deliciously hooky and anthemic chorus that is quite frankly too irresistible to be denied. If "One Night" is any indication of where Koma is sonically heading with his forthcoming debut LP, music fans everywhere are in for a real treat.
