Hot New Talent Alert: Listen to Nina Nesbitt Debut Single 'Boy'
When Nina Nesbitt first started putting her thoughts on paper it was purely a way for her to overcome her extreme shyness. She started writing poetry and short stories with the intent of becoming an author at some point. But her pop-loving parents - her mother loves Abba and Christina Aguilera; her dad is obsessed with Roxy Music - encouraged Nina to turn her words into songs. Music ultimately became Nina's main creative outlet after she picked up the guitar and started playing keys.
The Scottish singer first sang in public in her final year at primary school when she took part in a talent show, singing Christina Aguilera’s "Beautiful. She entered other talent contests, began playing acoustic nights in and around Edinburgh. One of the first songs she wrote on guitar, "Standing On One Leg," about growing up, broke her in to the music business after a chance meeting with Ed Sheeran at a radio gig in Edinburgh last summer. Sheeran asked her to come on tour with him which made her many new fans and helped tune her craft.
Earlier this month, Nina released her official debut single, titled "Boy," a feisty slice of acoustic pop that features her storytelling lyrics and sing-song vocal style on verses. Nesbitt likes to describe her sound as "acoustic merged with a bit of electric" that echoes many different inspirations. "I like to listen to artists such as Eva Cassidy, Nirvana, The Weeknd, Ed Sheeran, Ben Howard, Ellie Goulding and more," she explains. "So I guess I've just developed my own style over the years. Life events and people I met inspire the songs I write."
Produced by Jake Gosling, "Boy" is a track she wrote almost two years but finished over the summer. "I remember writing it in my bedroom by myself and it started with a similar guitar riff," the songstress explains. "However, it was put in the studio two months ago and I really just clicked with some production ideas I had and it came to life. I really feel that I've found my unique sound with this song. Although, as myself and fans like the stripped-back tracks there'll also be a plain guitar and voice take on the single bundle." (Nora Nesbitt "Boy" is available on iTunes UK now.)
