Hot New Talent Alert: Watch VAZ 'Miss Frost' Video Premiere
Quality Swedish pop comes in more sizes than one. Sweden serves up a variety of pop that runs the gamut from sweet to crunchy -- from the hyper-melodic Euro-pop of Loreen to the heartfelt balladry of Andreas Moe, and from the timeless, dance-edged pop of Robyn to the indie pop sensibilities of The Knife to name a few examples.
Newcomers VAZ add a whole new twist to the ever-evolving Swedish pop mix. Based in Stockholm, VAZ is the teaming of sisters Cecilia and Jenny Vaz who deliver a propulsive, forward blend of pop that mixes traditional African drums, electronic beats and multi-dimensional harmonies that is both intensely compelling and a little haunting. The sisters like to describe their brand of music as "a dirty love affair between the urban and the electronic."
Their new single "Miss Frost" is a perfect example of their wildly unorthodox sound that accentuates their obsession with mashing organic instrumentation with electronic production stylings while incorporating glossy melodic harmonies. Check the video of the song below that neatly captures the atmospheric, escapist qualities of the song.
The video was directed by Magnus Harder, and styled by Tommie X and Josefin Hinders who previously styled videos for Robyn and Rebecca & Fiona. The group also created an alternate version of "Miss Frost" that includes samples of Stockholm street sounds. Highly recommended. (Download MP3).
