[VIDEO] Watch Thomas Azier "Red Eyes"
One of the most compelling new artist showcases I saw at Musexpo in Los Angeles last week was the performance of Berlin-based singer/songwriter Thomas Azier. In fact, I was so impressed by his first show that I decided to see him perform again two days later to experience this rapidly rising phenom all over again. And Azier has the industry buzzing. Lana Del Rey's French pal WoodKid is a fan and word is that Pharrell Williams also has been raving about Azier among friends.
The early buzz should come as no surprise. Azier's brightly dark brand of pop is an unorthodox blend of hard-hitting Berlin techno, melodic melancholy and the singer's bare-knuckle delivery that will send chills up your spine. Azier crafts primal pop marked by stark production stylings and his warm humanity that is inspired the city of Berlin and its people.
I had a chance to talk extensively with Azier about his point of view, the power of pop and his new music. Azier is adamant about referring to his music as pop. Yes, his sound is dark at times, but "there's always a light at the end of the tunnel," he explains in our sit-down. Look out for my full interview with Azier soon. In the meantime, watch the video for "Red Eyes" to get a good feel about Azier and his music. (Download "Red Eyes" for free.)
