Dragonette Rules The World with Bright New Pop in New York City [Gig Review]

Dragonette is gearing up for another summer of sun and bright new pop with some fantastic new music they will be unveiling over the next few months. Riding high on the global success of "Hello" (and finally grabbing a coveted Juno Award in Canada), the Canadian pop trio performed at a sold out Bowery Ballroom in New York City last weekend to warm up for their much-anticipated Coachella gig and introduce some of their new album material to fans.

After openers The Knocks and Xylos energized their hometown crowd, Dragonette took the stage in front of a packed room. The trio of Martina, Joel and Dan jumped right into action with an electrifying performance of "Hello" to get one of the most anticipated tracks right out of the way and greet their fans with proper gusto. The group gently segued from their global monster hit into new track "Life In This City," a signature Dragonette tune full of uplifting energy and a steady dance groove that surely will be a strong single contender.

Dragonette continued mashing up new tracks with fan favorites and the occasional rarity, including "Animale," their stomping collaboration with Dutch DJ Don Diablo. The group kept up the energy with their amped up performance of "Fire In Your New Shoes" (their teaming with Kaskade) that was appropriately followed by the massively catchy new "My Legs Go Out Late" that is one of the most exciting new tunes to look out for as soon as the group's new album hits this fall.

The group's Bowery Ballroom stage was set up with flashing, neon-lit squares, pulsing LED torches and a sophisticated light show that engulfed the stage with bright hues of orange, blue and green to create a joyous visual backdrop for their new music. Sassy, sweet and subtly sexual, Martina took full command of the room interacting with fans while being visibly excited to perform a few new tracks. "We are playing some new songs that you haven't heard before and I hope you like them," she told the crowd half-way through the show, which was followed by happy roar of the adoring audience that prompted a medley of "Easy," "Big Sunglasses" and that oh-so delicious "Our Summer."

Other new tracks that the group played included "My Work Is Done" and "The Right Woman." The latter is a collaboration with producer Felix Blowsom (Sia, Empire Of The Sun) that is included on "Proud To Be Woman Vol. 3," a compilation release put together by fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg in celebration of International Women's Day.

Before heading into their 2-song encore, the group closed with the exuberant new single "Let Go" and "Fixin' To Thrill." Dragonette didn't take too long to return to the stage with fans unanimously cheering and raving for wanting more. The trio brought special guest Sara Quinn (from Tegan & Sara) back with them to perform "Okay Dolores" together.

The group concluded the show with "I Get Around," their very first hit song from 2007 that reminded fans of how it all started. The song showed how the group has evolved sonically over the last five years while also emphasizing that Dragonette's supreme brand of joyous, intelligent pop continues to shines brightly with their very exciting new music.
