Tiesto Launches Club Life Channel on Sirius XM Radio [Exclusive Interview]


Tiesto is without a doubt one of the biggest music stars on the planet. For almost two decades, the Dutch superstar DJ has been filling up stadiums around the world with fans enthralled, energized and bowing down to every single beat he drops.

Leveraging his immense popularity, Tiesto has developed a multi-faceted brand that markets more than just music. Together with corporate partners like Heineken and HP, and without a major label on his site, he has successfully built and expanded his Club Life lifestyle vision that incorporates his own video series, podcast, music releases and even a fashion line of stylish graphic tees that are perfect fit for a night out on the town.

This week, at Miami's annual Winter Music Conference, Tiesto announced a partnership with Sirius XM satellite radio to launch his own Club Life radio channel. I sat down with Tiesto's in Miami Beach's swanky new Soho House to talk about this new venture, the importance of radio and some of his new music that's on the way.

He explains that the partnership with Sirius XM was a very natural fit for the further expansion of his Club Life vision. "Sirius XM has been leading the way with new radio programming and it is available to so many people," Tiesto says. "Dance music especially has been very popular for the station, so they approached me to start my own radio channel on Sirius XM. It is a really great way for me to introduce new upcoming talents, but also play classic dance tunes."

Ever since growing up in Holland, Tiesto has always had a very special relationship with radio. He talks in particular about some of the shows on Dutch radio that were crucial to him in his development as a DJ. "The Top 40 show was a must listen for me," he smiles and reminisces. "I tuned in for that every week. And of course I listened to Ferry Maat's "Soulshow," which was one of the first dedicated dance music program on Dutch radio.

Tiesto points out that radio remains important but that the way people listen to radio and find music has changed over the years, noting that radio can now be very helpful with the curation of new music. "Before the internet age, you sat down, tuned in to your favorite station and waited for a track to come on. Nowadays, as soon as you hear a track on the radio you can Google it and find it on iTunes. It's such a different world now." 

Following the premiere of the Club Life radio show on Sirius XM, there's a lot more Club Life goodness coming, including "Club Life Volume 2; Miami," a new album compilation of Tiesto originals and remixes. The disc features his remixes of tracks by Coldplay, The Naked & The Famous and Gotye, plus original new tracks with Swanky Tunes, Wolfgang Gartner. The disc will be out globally on April 24.
