Afrojack Gearing Up For U.S. Tour and New Album Release [Exclusive Interview]
After winning a coveted GRAMMY, cranking out countless remixes and celebrating a global crossover smash with "Take Over Control" featuring Eva Simons, 2011 was without a doubt a breakthrough year for Dutch superstar DJ Afrojack. And he's planning to make 2012 even bigger with a global tour on the books, a new artist album and the expansion of his Wall Records label imprint. All of his focus is first on promoting his new single "Can't Stop Me," a soaring dance pop confection that features the powerful vocals of Dutch soul group Shermanology.
"There's no real secret or formula to what I have achieved so far," Afrojack tells me backstage at the Ultra Music Festival. "All I can say is that you only live once and I want to do something that makes me happy. It is not important if it makes you rich or poor, as long as it makes you happy. Music made me happy so it was just something that I instinctively pursued. You have to pursue your dreams."
He adds, "What's interesting is that I never dreamt about being a DJ and have all of this success. It just happened to me because I followed my passion."
Afrojack smiles and remembers that he did have a dream about being a DJ once - well, sorta. "I did literally dream one time about deejaying at a club in Rotterdam and I had to go to the bathroom to take a leak and while I was there the track that I was playing finished," which sounds more like a proper nightmare and not a dream filled with ambition.
Standing almost 7 feet tall, Afrojack is a mighty presence who has plans that are equally large. He will kick off his U.S. tour in the next few weeks that is followed by a summer tour in Europe. Later this year, he also plans on releasing his new artist album. "People can expect some new shit," Afrojack explains. "I don't like repeating myself. Obviously, it will be an Afrojack album so it will have some of my trademark sounds but it will be different and fresh."
He also tells me that he recently worked with Redfoo of LMFAO and Far East Movement in Amsterdam to "exchange ideas" about new music. But his primary focus right now is on on his single "Can't Stop Me" that features new dance pop group Shermanology that he's helping to develop. Other artists on his new Wall Records imprint that he is very proud of include Sydney Samson and R3hab who just won Best New DJ earlier this week at the International Dance Music Wards.
