Musto: "Lady Gaga is the New Roisin Murphy"

Ro18

New York nightlife maven and legendary Village Voice columnist Michael Musto might just have ignited a little bitch fight when he wrote that Lady Gaga is the new Roisin Murphy.

"Adele is a healthy Amy Winehouse (unless she's just a food binger instead of a drug abuser)," Musto writes. "And Roísín Murphy is the new Kylie Minogue—a dance-music chantoozie whose Saint at Large concert at Mansion last week brought the queens out in force ( . . . ) Another reflecting-shade wearer, Lady Gaga is the new Roísín Murphy."

I like his little play with female artists, but Roisin Murphy should stay out of the picture. Perhaps Lady Gaga is the new Katy Perry (a one hit wonder), a new Kylie Minogue (forgive me) or perhaps just a colorful knit of existing styles (read this), but our Murphy is in a whole different stratosphere. Well said, Arjan!

I can't believe that Róisín has been around for thirteen years or so in the business, with six albums under her belt (four with Moloko and two as a solo artist), and she's written about as if she were some kind of new flavor of the month!!!

She deserves way more respect than that.

Lady Gaga is the new Katy Perry (a one hit wonder)

Preach.

Roisin is a hundred times better a vocalist than that Minogue woman, who is manufactured sanitized rubbish.Lady Gaga will burn after her one hit no doubt.

Posted by: Saveme at Oct 29, 2008 6:31:09 PM

To say that Roisin Murphy is the new Kylie is ridiculous. Minogue has been around for over 20 years and has sold 60 million albums worldwide as a solo artist. There will never be a 'New' Kylie.

Perhaps Musto shouldn't compare these ladies at all. I'm sorry but Roisin is in a league of her own.

Posted by: Kyle at Oct 30, 2008 6:28:30 AM

It's not right to compare these artists to each other on the basis of them being female- the listed names have little to do with each other either style or career-wise, so the only basis for comparison that we're left to look at is gender and the fact that they have had a decent amount of popularity or buzz around them recently.

Here in Belgium, we don't know that "Musto", but we can tell you that he is a complete moron!
How dares he compare the Sun and the dirt.

Since she's 19, Roisin writes, produces and sings her own songs. She's a boss, not an employee. Do you only remenber the debut of Kylie Minogue, with the infamous Stock Aitken & Watersomething? She's just a product , like a toothpaste.

Above all, Roisin is a fantastic singer and performer, (and she didn't even planed to be one). Did that guy ever listen to these masterpieces called "Ruby Blue" or "Statues"?

Musicaly, she's on an another planet, but despite that, she's a real human beeing, i can tell you (yes, i've met her!)

Roisin Murphy is a completely amazing person with soul and passion, how dare Musto compare her to whoever!!! The raw talent she possesses is incredible, her music is so cosmic it sends you to another galaxy!

Lady GaWHO?

Posted by: xolondon at Oct 30, 2008 4:20:40 PM

Oh my... what do we have here? Sorry to sound like a dimplomatic loser, but all these ladies are incredibly talented. Why must we pit them against each other like this? It's hard enough for a girl out there and these are all women who have taken charge of their careers. They called the shots and they got what they wanted. Celebrate that; let's not make it an ugly thing!

Lady Gaga - her album is hot and no she isn't a one hit wonder. She's getting love everywhere but in the U.S.

Kylie - she is the sweetest person and after all the personal struggle she's gone through; give her a break!

Katy Perry - she is NOT a one hit wonder. She's accomplished more in the last 5 months than 99.9% of us will in our lifetime. give credit where due.

Roisin - she's amazing (!!!); whether or not she'll get the widespread success that some of the others mentioned in this posting yet remains to be seen, but i don't really think she cares to be frank.

Oh my... what do we have here? A little bonfire?

Lady Gaga - her album is hot and no she isn't a one hit wonder. She's getting love everywhere but in the U.S. Okay, Arjan, I'm torn - you seem to be all "hot n cold" on her.

Kylie - she is the sweetest person and after all the personal struggle she's gone through; give her a break!

Katy Perry - she is NOT a one hit wonder. i can assure you. She's accomplished more in the last 5 months than 99.9% of us will in our lifetime. let's give credit where due. her label is going through tough times and sometimes selling out a bit is a part of the game; even if it means pretending you like kissing girls.

Roisin - she's amazing (!!!)... but whether or not she'll get the widespread commercial success that some of the others mentioned in this posting have remains to be seen, but i don't really think she cares to be frank.

lady ga ga... seriously, it's a quick money scheme. similar to the mid 90's eurotrash one hit wonders.

roisin murphy... in a class of her own and has been for a very long time. true original in every sense.

katy perry... her 15 minutes are almost up.

Posted by: carlos at Oct 30, 2008 10:02:38 PM

It's obvious from the commets here, that most of you are foreigners (or just live way outside of New York), because Michael Musto's brand of bitter sarcasm is falling on deaf ears.

Roisin is EVERYTHING. Lady CACA is shit, and EVERYTHING wrong with music these days. If you can call what she does music.

Posted by: michael at Oct 30, 2008 11:31:52 PM

Roisin is visionary and her electricity and sincerity in her music (and look) is what separate her from this Lady Gaga and other. Is true maybe Lady Gaga has her place in the music industry, but is not and never will be in the same area as Roisin - jamais.

Posted by: Adi at Nov 1, 2008 6:00:59 AM

For whatever reason, pop music fans are divided over Gaga, so it's not a surprise that a facile comparison of her to Roisin (who has been around for what, 15 years?) is going to piss some people off. Gaga may be just as sincere in her music, but for some reason that is not getting through to some people, perhaps because she seems to have created an airtight "persona."

Kylie and Roisin meanwhile are NOTHING alike. Musto does a good job at getting attention doesn't he?

Posted by: xolondon at Nov 2, 2008 4:51:32 AM

kylie is in a league of her own (60 Mio rec. sold)
roisin is in a league of her own (she is just plain genius to me)
katy perry sees her 15 minutes of fame right now
lady gaga is just too overhyped and totally uninspiring (shes trying too hard imo)

and whats that about adele being called a "food binger" ? that is just sooo rude. this girl is real and has so much talent. her voice is amaaazing...

nuff said
i dont care who this musto guy is. i dont get his sarcasm. how can u compare an apple with a fish? just because they are females doesnt put them in one bin to be compared to. puuulhease!!!

Lady Gaga is Dirrty era Xtina crossed with Europop gimmickry and glam schlock appeal. She is novelty at best.

Posted by: Alexis at Nov 11, 2008 7:04:17 PM

Roisin is legend. A true artist who has influenced the electronica scene with her solo and Moloko efforts as nobody during the 2000's. Her music is very inspired and philosophized unlike Gaga's commercial and shallow music.

Even though I respect, admire and like Lady Gaga for her fun and successful music, we can't even compare her work to Murphy's which has depth and true electronica/experimantal quality.

Also Katy Perry is NOT a "one hit wonder". I Kissed a Girl hit #1 for 7 weeks on the Hot 100 and worldwide (3,6 million sold in the US). Hot and Cold hit #3 going 3x Platinum by RIAA and it also hit #1 in the majority of the charts worldwide(almost 4.000.000 units sold in the US, more airplay than I Kissed a Gril = a bigger hit than I Kissed a Girl). Thinking of You was another mild hit, peaking at #29 and achieving significant staying power on the charts selling almost 1.000.000 copies in the US and becoming one of the big airplay hits of 2009. Lastly we have Waking Up in Vegas wich currently sits at #9 on the Hot 100 and is expected to further rise in the top 10, as it has hit #1 on the Pop/Mainstream Charts. Waking Up in Vegas has also sold over 1,300,000 copies in the US and is already in the Airplay top 5.

So Katy Perry has already scored 4 hits. furthemore, her album, "One of The Boys", has gone Platinum selling over 1,500,000-1,600,000 in the US only; and over 3,200,000-3,400,000 copies worldwide, which is amazing for todays standards, as it is one of the best selling albums of both 2008 and 2009 (according to IFPI).

In other words calling Katy a one hit wonder means that you are either mentally retarted or a hater.

Also, comparing Gaga to Kylie is another stupid and ignorant thing to do, as she is an extremely succesful and established artist, who has been staggeringly successful worldwide for over 20 years. Her music is very innovative and Minogue is considered to be a idol, diva and a very influential and highly respected personality in the world of pop, just like the Queen of Pop, Madonna.

Anyway this article is such a fail. Completely stupid with ignorant comparisons and statements. I can write something way more accurate and interesting in approximately 5 minutes.

:roll eyes:
