Listen to The Aikiu "The Red Kiss"

Theaiku

This is so fresh. Even the Brits haven't found out about it yet.

Jean Phillipe points me to emerging new French pop artist The Aikiu. Born in Paris, the singer now travels between New York, Paris and Los Angeles to work on a range of different music projects, including his own.

The Aikiu is no stranger to traveling and takes his musical cues from a myriad of different cultures. His father was a traveling salesman, which took young Aikiu from Paris to Morocco, Libya, Guinea, Senegal and Gambia all before the age of nine. In his teens, he moved from Africa to Southern California where his passion for music flourished. He listened to everything from Madonna to Michael Jackson, and from R&B to classic soul tunes.

He was initially signed to Los Angeles based Violator Management (home of some leading hip hop artists) but his development deal hit a rough spot when his manager passed away. He returned to Paris to work with greats like Timbaland and Nile Rodgers to finetune his soundboard crafts. He started working on some songs together with childhood friend Julien Vichinevsky, which lead to the production of an EP of songs.

One of the most noteworthy tracks on this EP is "The Red Kiss," a song filled with '80s inspired synths and The Aikiu's emotive, imperfect vocals that give it loads of authenticity.

No one's heard of him yet cause he sucks. I could barely listen to the whole song. Unimaginative, boring, shit.

Amazing track. The songwriting, the voice and the lyrics are great.Classic indeed but still magic, especially considering that it seems to be a demo.

I'd rather listening to horny, mating cats than this. Arjan, you're usually right on the money! What are you thinking?

Are you punking us?
