Katy Perry = Katy Hudson = Christian Singer?

Katyhudson

Yes. That girl in the photo above is Katy Hudson aka Katy Perry.

Katy is currently climbing up the Billboard charts with "I Kissed A Girl" but she actually started her career as a gospel singer in the Christian industry - as Katy Hudson. Who would have thought? And it makes me wonder... Was gospel not lucrative enough or did she have change of heart and did she want the rebel inside of her come out more?

Believenet.com reports, "The daughter of two conservative preachers, Katy Hudson signed with Red Hill Records and in 2001 released an album filled with Christian pop/rock radio-friendly songs. She even toured with Phil Joel. Red Hill Records folded. Somewhere along the way changed her name to Katy Perry, whether to avoid confusion with actress Kate Hudson or to shed her Christian association, I don't know, but in 2004 she went on to become an in-house vocalist for the production team, The Matrix, whose credits include Avril Lavigne and Britney Spears. "

The Christian blog goes on to say that Kay's new album "is definitely not a Christian album, although the lyrics to the song, 'Lost,' allude to a spiritual searching."

I remember seeing Katy in concert, while still going under the name of Hudson, with Bebo Norman and Shaun Groves. At that time I was amazed by her "spiritual" self with her comments as God's been great to me etc!
Recently I heard the song "I Kissed A Girl" and was not at all shocked. Most people who grow up in Christians homes still need to find and accept Christ as their personal Savior and not just think that because their parents are Christians that they themselves are too. Kind of like 'guilt by association'. Christianity doesn't work that way. You are responsible for your own salvation and you can't depend on someone else too. Maybe Katy is just needing to find where she wants to be. We can all just pray that she will realize that certain choices in life make things harder.

Wow. Not only are you assuming that Katy Perry (nee Hudson) is not a Christian, you're assuming she never was....and all because of a song on a new, mainstream album?

That she's singing fun pop songs and touring as a mainstream artist now does NOT mean she was lying 5 years ago about about how good God is. It doesn't mean she's not a Christian, or that she doesn't believe in and love Christ as her personal Savior.

It means she's trying her art in a new community...apparently because the former community (the Christian one) didn't appreciate it. Or maybe because she realized it was kind of lame to sing cheesy Christian-ese songs.

Speaking as an artist who's very much a Christian and has also been judged and had her faith questioned for saying "what the hell is wrong with me," I know how incredibly disheartening it is to see/hear people who don't know you from Adam making judgements Christ alone can make.

Kudos to Katy for finding her way and making a name for herself in a different market.

And shame on you, Will-W, for feigning to know the heart of another well enough to judge it....and all based on a stupid song!

Forgive me! It was Staci Leatherman I quoted, not Will-W.

It's not just "pop" that she's singing now...the lyrics in the song and the antics in the video fly directly in the face of what she claims to believe (or once did). Please don't misquote the "don't judge" scripture to us. We all are judged every day by the things we say and do. To condone a sinful lifestyle, to change from influencing others to seek a closer relationship with one's maker to influencing others to satisfy the lusts of the flesh is not merely "being an artist" who has changed audiences. It is sad. What does it profit her to gain the whole world but lose her very soul? It amazes me how people claiming "True Christianity" feel free from the responsibilities that accompany the Faith.
Maybe she no longer claims to be a "Christian"...that's a possibility. I just hope she isn’t falling for the lie that you can love both, the world, and the Lord. It doesn't work like that. Anyone who tells you different is a fool or a liar.

I agree with "staci leatherman"
being myself a pastor’s daughter…I perfectly understand Katy…Christians tend to lock themselves in an imaginary world where every christians are true, sincere, and are deeply searching to be like God…But hey! they are just ashamed of their own real life and rather live a “holy” life in front of everyone (since every other christians do so) and have a parallel sinful life that is even darker than what an average person would have…They are bitter and rather “mentaly torture” those who want to be true to themselves than admiting their own shallowness and fears of “what will other christians think of me?!”
I believe that you rather be true to yourself and to others: first you won’t take God for a dumb***s and second you’ll be happier living without hypocrisy…
We were placed on earth to live here…not to live a fake life lying to ourselves…

I don’t personaly like her music but deeply believe that talent, music and everything that goes with it does not come from hell or whoever lives down there…To believe that, would be to consider God as a weak god and consider satan as a great artist that can give talent and inspire music.. God does not go through deep anguish asking help from his "holy followers" when a human slides off the so called “straight path”… Hey! he knows and controls much more than what christians can think!
does somebody knows what "believer" means!

Soory I meant: I agree with "ajk"

wow.... it's really sad how many "Christians" out there don't know what it's all about.... I don't even know where to start with all of those comments that were made. All I can say is read your Bible. Ask the Holy Spirit to REVEAL God's word to you. Because it is LIVING. It's not just a book for us to take our own interpretations out of just to satisfy our own desires and validate our lifestyle. The Truth is in there... but when people claim to be Christian or people start preaching their own beliefs and put a Christian label on it, thats when Jesus dying on the cross becomes a mockery. But I know Katy's parents are still praying for her. I pray that those songs she once wrote to Him invade her dreams and thoughts as she tries to write for the world, and realize that her gift was meant for Him all along.

I think it could be two things, either she grew up in a christian home and kind of disassociated with beliefs she was brought up with, or she still someone who has faith is just figuring out things. I'm not accusing or judging as to what her situation is, but it is true that sometimes kids grow up with beliefs but never fully embrace them. That MIGHT be her case.

I think children of pastors and very, very rigid/legalistic parents tend to rebel one way or another. I'm a Christian and so is my whole family. I can see within my own extended family that the parents that boxed their kids in and didn't let them think for themselves, now have kids that are very rebellious and not serving the Lord. We must remember the verse in the Proverbs that says "Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it." So even when it looks as though all hope is lost and someone has forsaken God, God has not forsaken them. If their faith was ever true the Holy Spirit will woe them back at some point. I don't think the rebellion is towards God but towards their parents.

Hey, I'm a Christian and I also kissed a girl and I liked it too.

I love God and unfortunately I like girls too. I was raised in a christian home, have been a pastors wife, ordained in ministry etc...

God's not finished with me yet. Yes I do believe it's wrong to be with the same sex. But it's also wrong to be an ass to everyone and not show God's love. Aren't we all working on something???????? Aren't we all a mess without God? Does God remove His anointing because we fail? NO, Jimmy Swaggart, Ray Boltz, Terry Macalmon, Michael English, Sandi Patty, Ted Haggard etc....they've all fallen into lust...WHATEVER, not our place to decide if they are christian or not, that's just disgusting. We will all be changed someday and be incorruptable, in the meantime for now in our human forms, we are just people capable of doing unbelievable things. Be careful who you judge lest you find yourself someday walking in their shoes.

How arrogant to think WE (humans) can ever be anything without Him. Remember it's HIS righteousness the bible says ...the righteousness of JESUS. NOT our works, but His, lest any of us boast!!! That's why I cry MERCY and rely on Grace just to manage a smile at times. Thanks Pop for loving me in spite of me!!!

If we would preach love, mercy and grace instead of seperation, judgements and law, more people would get to know Him. He's worthy to praised for his everlasting tender mercies!!!

Just because she sung "I kissed a girl." doesn't mean she is going to hell. I listened to the the song it's not that bad...but weird.

It's just a song from this society so she get's money.

"Not everyone who says to me,'Lord, Lord' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he/she who does the will of my Father..." Matt.7:21.
"The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire" Luke 3:9.
"Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. Romans 8:5.
"the acts of the sinful nature are obvious...I warned you as I did before that those who live like this will not inherit the Kingdom of God."

Im shocked at how many people going under the banner "christian" are approving of such acts? We are called to be transformed not conformed. The language that is going around here(Col. 3:8)...do any of you read your bible? who cares about title...where is your fruit?
