Kylie Minogue Releases New U.S. Single

Arjanwrites_kyliesingle

With all the buzz surrounding Roisin Murphy's genius new video, Robyn's show in Austin, TX this week, Duffy's free music give-away on iTunes and Madonna's questionable new single art and touching Rock & Roll Hall of Fame speech, it might be easy to overlook another significant pop moment this week.

Kylie Minogue formally released "All I See" on iTunes yesterday. It is the singer's first U.S. single since 2005's "I Believe In You," That song went on to the #3 spot on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play Chart in early 2005, and was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Dance Recording category in 2006.

"All I See" is a decent mid-tempo R&B jam, but I was hoping for something a little more juicy from Minogue to capture U.S. attention. Click here to download "All I See" on iTunes (and get Duffy's "Mercy" for free while you're there).

Great news! Kylie is a great pop artist - I'll never understand why she's not huge in the US like she is elsewhere. I think she'll do well here with this one though!

I love Kylie but not this single choice. I hope it does well but I think they could have picked something better to stand out at radio. "In My Arms"...maybe? The video is good on that one, too. Oh well. Good luck Kyles!

I don't think you know what "genius" means.

It is interesting that Kylie Minogue has never made it in the US. Maybe they already have enough female artists of her type of their own? There is nothing about Kylie that really makes her stand out. Her music, while fun to dance to is pop fluff, she is ok looking but on the short side, she does not write her own material and her voice is very ordinary. Listen to "X" and you have the same girlie voice electronically manipulated to fill it out. She does not have the vocal capacity of say Christina Aguilera or even Beyonce. She's huge in Britain, though, even more so than her home country of Australia. Guess that's because we down under remember her in her teenage role as "Charlene" in a second-rate soapie called "Neighbours". She doesn't look like she did in her Charlene days either, and I don't think it's just to do with being older! Anyway, it will be interesting to see if the American public warms to this offering.

Actually Liela, Kylie might not be as big in the US as other places, but to say she hasn't "made it" there is just not true. She's had five Top 40 US hits, including two Top Tens; a Gold certification for album sales of over 500,000 ("Kylie, 1988); a Platinum certification for sales of over a million ("Fever", 2002); multiple appearances on the US dance charts, including several #1s; and four Grammy nominations, including a win in 2004 for Best Dance Recording for 'Come Into My World'. In fact, Kylie has scored more Grammy nominations in this category than any other artist.

Oh, and as for "she doesn't write her own material": she has written songs on each album since her third one, "Rhythm of Love". "X" is her tenth album.

i like kylie. ''x'' is amazing electro-pop. I don't know why ''all i see'', and not ''wow'' as a single choice, maybe for the huge appeal of R&B in the U.S.A. It would be great to see more pop music in the north-american charts !!!

Another response to Leila: I don't think Kylie ever set out to become a great song writer. She is a pop singer, she is not Tori Amos. She has co-written many of her songs, including the UK #1 "Slow".

Regarding her vocal capability, no she does not have a Christina or Beyonce voice, BUT what she brings to the table is far more important for her fans. She's fun, not too serious, campy (but not too campy as say Cher), and has grown a lot since her 1997 album "Impossible Princess". Back to her vocals, watch one of her concerts on DVD and you'll see a spectacular show where Ms. Minogue does not lip synch at all (look at Janet, Britney, even Madonna in the past).

More than 50 million albums sold worldwide is more than artist with 15 minutes of fame, and frankly I don't think she cares if the U.S ever embraces her top 40-wise ever again, she has her devoted fans in North America and a lot of them.

Kylie's choice for "All I See" is spot on...like it or not the US market is a one trick pony and the dull Hip-Hop theme is still running (granted it is starting to run out of gas) in the States. "All I See" has a very Janet Jackson "All For You" feel to it and if promoted will catch on well. Perhaps not like "Can't Get You.." but it would do well. Likewise a follow up with "Two Hearts" would be smart. "In My Arms" and "WOW" are my favorites and might do well on the charts after the more typical "All I See"- they are not US types of singles. They are Euro-Dance fun pop...which just isn't considered "cool" by US music buyers...

Well now that Ms Minogue has made her assault on the American market, I guess it has made its assessment of what she has to offer. Sales have been very disappointing with many major stores not even stocking her CD. The choice of single was woeful, and I would agree that there are far better songs on her album X. However, she was required to perform live on many of her TV appearances and too many of the songs on X are so electronically manipulated that would be hard to do. Instead she opted for a boring, repetitive song that just didn't have the impact required. Re Fernando, I don't need to watch a DVD of a concert as I went to one she performed in her hometown of Melbourne when she resumed performing after her illness. The show was highly entertaining and I enjoyed it, but I was left questioning how much of it was really Kylie? Her voice was padded out most of the time by very talented backing singers, her costumes were over-the-top couture, for many of her songs she was accompanied by a troupe of male dancers, there were lots of lighting and special effects, etc, etc. Take all this away, leaving just Kylie, and you get what we saw on those embarrassing American TV shows recently. I am in no way denying that she has been successful in the UK and Australia in particular, but the American market is very different and she just didn't appeal. Sure she can put on a good show, and produce great videos and albums by surrounding herself with very talented people who can maximize her ordinary talent, but when she has to sing solo as just Kylie, she just hasn't got what it takes.

I think her new album is one the best albums to come out in 2008.Madonnas album (as alot of people have said sucked, and was dissapointing because her work is usually trailblazing). The only reason i downloaded it,because it was recommended on zune. I totally forgot about her, was really popular in the U.S. not to long ago for "Cant get you out of my head". I remember hearing buzz about her being the international Madonna. But nobodys heard of her in the U.S. Her videos seemed really cool for a TRL type crowd( i was in junior high). She wasnt overally popular, but she managed to be remembered. As far as the U.S. you can be here today and gone tommorow. Janet's not even popular anymore and madonna really isnt either. It's just the way it works here.
As far as kylie goes, some of her stuff just down right sucks. And some of it is incredible. The problem with her,the stuff that's weird and sucks doesnt cater to my taste and alot of us fans.
