Listen to Zazie "Je Suis Un Homme"
Before I left France last week, I picked up a bunch of new CDs at Nice airport, including "Totem," the latest disc by French pop singer Zazie.
Zazie is an established singer/songwriter in France who also had success in Canada. "Totum" is her sixth studio album and follows 2004's very successful "Rodeo." Zazie has been one of the few mainstream artists in France who has addressed the importance of adopting proper gay rights, most noteably on the electro stomper "Adam & Yves" (clever word play) from her 2001 disc "La Zizanie" that is available on iTunes.
On "Totem," Zazie tackles a lot of personal topics including her thoughts about politics and the environment. My favorite song on the album is the epic and gorgeous pop-rock tune "Je Suis Un Homme," which translates to "I Am Human." (I'm glad my six years of studying French still comes in handy sometimes.)
The track is a very explicit statement about the state of world. Zazie sings about overpopulation, famine, the lack of proper drinking water and the ignorance of the "consumerist" Western world. Famed director Yvan Attal directed a fitting video to visualize that message. You can watch the video for "Je Suis Un Homme" here.
For some reason, I can totally hear Kelly Clarkson record a cover of this in English. It would fit her vocal range very well. Hopefully, Zazie's label Mercury France will make "Totem" available on iTunes in the States soon.

Shouldn't it be "I Am a Man" ???

Here's a translation I made. I still think it sounds better in French. =P
I am a man from Cro-Magnon
I am a monkey or a fish
On the Earth in all seasons
Me, I turn round and round
I am a single amongst millions
I am a man with the heart of a lion
To war in all seasons
Me, I turn round and round
I am a man full of ambition
Beautiful car, and a beautiful house
In the bedroom, in the living room
Me, I turn round and round
I make love and revolution
I avoid questions
I advance, advance while in retreat
And I turn round and round
You see, I am not a man
I am the king of illusion
At heart, may one forgive me
I am the king, the king of fools
I make the world to my liking
Immersed in gold and concrete
People encaged, thrown in prison
Me, I turn round and round
Seated in front of my television
I am of humanity, the negation
Pure product of consummation
Yes, my account is good my account is good
You see, I am not a man
I am the king of illusion
At heart, may one forgive me
I am the king, the king of fools
It's me
The master of fire
The master of games
The master of the world
And look what I have made of it
A frozen Earth
A burned Earth
The Earth of men that men abandon
I am a man at the foot of the wall
Like an error of nature
On the Earth, with no other reason
Me, I turn round and round
I am a man and I measure
all the horror of my nature
For my pain, my punishment
Me, I turn round and round
