Hot New Talent Alert: Plastic Operator

Stylish and sleek. That's the best way to describe the music from new electro-pop outfit Plastic Operation. They're a little Air, a little Postal Service and a bit like Arling & Cameron.

Their press biography takes it a few steps beyond those comparisons, and describes the group as the "perfect pop group for our times" because they are "internationally minded, technically savvy and blessed with the ability to sculpt sublimely soulful pop moments from raw digital clay." That last statement I fully agree with.

Plastic Operator are Mathieu Gendreau (electronics) & Pieter Van Dessel (vocals). Respectively hailing from Montreal and Antwerp, the pair met at London's Westminster University in 2001 where they were both studying audio production. They bonded over a shared love of two decades of fine electronic pop music from artists like Jean-Michel Jarre, Akufen and Pet Shop Boys.

Their efforts resulted in the release of a debut EP debut that included the song "Folder" that caught the attention of music stores in Europe and a few radio DJs.  Pieter & Mathieu released their full-length debut, titled "Different Places," in May in Europe that includes "Folder" and their new single "Why Don't You" that you can stream on their MySpace page.

The strength of Plastic Operator's music lies in its electro simplicity. It is charming and sweet without being frilly and overly-produced.
