It Is a Small World After All
It is a small world after all, and pop's extensive family tree might not be so intricate as it appears. I happen to come across this song in my iTunes library last night. Then I listened to this and to this (skipping the 2 minute long interlude), followed by this.
Don't get me wrong. I love what JT did on FS/LS. But once again, it is pretty obvious that modern pop music is often inspired by the past and some of the recycling is done superbly and some of it is done poorly.
It is interesting how Stephen Erlewine of AllMusic even argues that the past reinterprets the future when he reviews Prince's "3121." He states that it seems as if "if Prince had listened to enough Neptunes productions to understand how they've absorbed his music."
Food for thought.

JT actually mentioned on MTV on new release day that his album was inspired by Prince and listening to albums like 1999. One would think he listened to every Prince album under the sun to get tracks like Damn Girl and LoveStoned as well as the ones you were saddling up. Good call and stil love me some JT...

The whole album is full of references to Prince's music and lyrics. JT lacks a bit of black sexyness, and his voice of depth, but he's close...

what's your point? you're stating something that's already been pointed out by JT himself?

I prefer Prince and originality, thank you.
