Stream The Entire New Killers Single
We're getting surprise after surprise this week. Island/Def Jam just released an audio stream of The Killer's new single "When You Were Young." You all know how much I adore this band. I've traveled from Miami to Las Vegas, and from Atlanta to Los Angeles last year to see the band become the megasellers they are today. I was really looking forward to hearing some new work from Brandon and the guys. And here it is. Yes, it is grand and majestic. Yes, it has guitars and synths. Yes, Brandon's distinct vocals make it unmistakably a Killers tune. And yes, the nostalgic '80s vibe is still there. But when I'm hearing that glorious synth riff in the chorus, I'm just wondering if perhaps they tried too hard to come up with a hook. What do you think?

Calculated and pompous in 70mm Cinemascope.Hollow in a glorious way.
I will be over it before it is all over
the airwaves...moving nonetheless in a devilishly sexy-jesus boy kinda way.

They sound Canadian, mid-eighties. That's a compliment, by the way...
Not their strongest output, but it sure makes me wonder about the rest of the album.

I think they are saving a stronger song for the next single to keep the interest. A lot of people who have heard the album have said the rest is better than this. They are amazing.

Love it, though I guess the point is that it's so instantaneous it may not have legs. Looks to me like by this time next year Killers will be in Coldplay sales territory.

Brandon Flowers has an irritating off-key voice. There are much better bands who mine the same pseudo 80s territory that get no attention (The Departure and Kissing Tigers to name 2). I just don't get why the Killers are so hyped.
This song is too muddy and bombastic for my tastes. Just like all their other songs.

Off key? I suggest you download their version of Why Don't You Find Out For Yourself.

I've heard that version of that overrated Morrissey track. Not only does Brandon's voice sound flat, but the track is flat as well with no dynamics to speak of.

Hmm, I'm still getting used to the different sound so my mind is not made up yet on whether I like this new song or not. I'm just wondering if there are better singles in the album than this one, shouldn't one of those been the lead single instead of this? As for Brandon's voice, well, he never claimed to have the best vocals so I wouldn't really crucify him for that. He took on the job 'coz no one else would and he figured he was writing most of the lyrics anyway. If anything, it's good that he didn't allow his voice to be "processed" and over-produced like what the others usually do.

I think it's great! Yea it may be a little off key it still has some substance.

Oooh I loves me the killers thanks for posting I didn't realize they even had a new single. You're my hero.

oh people, he is NOT off-key.
it's the killers, not the arcade fire. there's a difference. just lighten up and enjoy a little fluff.
my only complaint is that at points his voice sounds like johnny from the goo goo dolls.
Posted by: frankie at Jul 15, 2006 8:07:09 PM
It's not that I don't like fluff... and for the record I think Arcade Fire is supremely overrated (I personally only like about 2 songs by them). It's just that the Killers are a bit crap. Add to that their whole pose and Brandon's "we're the best band ever" attitude and it just compounds ther hatred even more!

Eh, this seems a rather bland to me. But to each their own...

Who cares about the new song its kinda whatever, yeah they have talent and thats great and all but that Brandon guy needs to start with the stripping already. Get naked Brandon , Brendon whatever just do it.

You can burn me at the stake, but I find some kind of Bruce Springsteen in this track, especially towards the middle? I'm a huge killers fan. It's not crap, because I personally don't listen to crap. Hot Fuss has TREMENDOUS replay value - I still can listen all the way through, and it feels new to me even after the hundredth time through. And I can only say that a about a few albums - Pearl Jam Ten being one of them. So don't go there spouting words like "crap" or "flat." If you get your panties in a bunch because you think you hear "off key" sounds, (American Idol fans?), go dig up some gospel, or some Mozart.

Frankie, he is off-key. That's not a value judgment, it's just a fact. I still like it. They rock.

Pretty good, quite uplifting, can't wait to hear the rest of the album!!
