Free Download: Shiny Toy Guns "Le Disko"
Los Angeles foursome Shiny Toy Guns have been stirring up MySpace over the last year with more than 3 million spins of their tracks. Now, finally, the group has inked a major recording contract with the honchos at Universal/Motown. More proof that radio is becoming less and less important for emerging artists to get noticed and receive major distribution. And on a related note, it is an interesting move for a big U.S. label to sign a '80s inspired electro-band. Perhaps there are some changes on the horizon in the R&B pop dominated charts.
In any event, today's guilt-free mp3 download of STG's "Le Disko" is not entirely representative of the group's overall sound. It is leaning towards a rock-infused Peaches tune while most of the band's tracks are much more reminiscent of the smooth synth pop of Propaganda, Thompson Twins and even Arjan Writes faves The Modern with the melodic man/woman duets and the crisp retro undertones. Listen for example to "You Are The One" and "Don't Cry Out" on the group's MySpace page. All these songs first appeared on the group's independently released "We Are Pilots" (V1) that came out in January 2005.
Shiny Toys Guns originally were formed in Oklahoma but moved West with dreams of making it big. The group consists of Gregori Chad Petree (guitar, vocals), Carah Faye (vocals), Jeremy Dawson (synths), Mike Martin (Drums). Backed by Universal/Motown, Shiny Toy Guns has real breakout potential. I'll keep you posted.

I'm not too impressed with this band either... something off in the vocalists. Not a patch on The Modern.

OK, I'll be a little nicer. The song called "Photograph" is actually pretty good. Le Disko is crap though.

After a few listens of various songs it seems that this bands problem is the female vocalist doesn't fit with the 80s sounding backing track. The male singer fits much better. I'm loving Photograph mainly because she doesn't seem to be singing on it!

Just discovered these guys a couple days ago and purchased "We are Pilots" on Itunes the same day.
I must say that some of the album is really, really good whilst at times the rest is kind of, well, not so good.
I'd love to see them live.

This song rocks, I love the lyrics, they fascinate me. Sheer awesome. I'll totally look for their album.

Here's the thing. I don't want it to sound exactly like an 80's song. If I want to listen to the 80's then I'll go listen to songs that are actually from that time. I like the fact that it's blending different styles. Maybe this is hit or miss for some people, but when you make the same stereotypical music all the time.....it is boring. See: Country.
