Free Download: Editors "French Disko"

Arjanwrites_editors

Editors are one of the latest indie darlings to hit America this year. Founded in Birmingham, U.K., the rock quartet offers a sound that is comparable to Interpol, The Smiths and even Joy Division. The group put out their critically-acclaimed album "The Back Room" in the U.K. last July. According to the group's bio, they are creating a genre of their own that they like to call "dark disco." It is a fitting description of the vibe on their record with its emo-filled lyrics, propulsive guitar riffs and tinges of moody electronica on songs like "Camera" and "Distance."  You can download the entire album at 7Digital.

The group's cover of "French Disko" (originally by Stereolab) is the B-side of their single "Munich."  The song appears to have taken its inspiration from the 1789 French Revolution with lyrics that draw parallels with the seemingly "absurd" world of today "that is still worth fighting for."

This is an excellent track by an exciting new band. But be warned. Editors' music is an acquired taste. Give it some time to let it grow on you. (Thanks to Editors' management for allowing posting of this track. On a personal note, I'd like to dedicate this post to my favorite Editor JP who is moving on to much bigger things at LOGO. It was a pleasure!)

Hmmm, I definitely hear the Joy Division influence in the track. Not sure about the Smiths, but just about anything dark and brooding can be attributed to the Pope of Mope, eh? Speaking of which, when's his next album coming out???

nice coverage of editors... they KICK. The Back Room is an outstanding album and this cover just solidifies the band's talent.

You've summed it up perfectly with the 'acquired taste' comment. I thought their singles were a bit boring for ages, then something just clicked and now I love them.

I also really like the lead singer's voice, but (from the way it sounds and the way he looks) it doesn't look like it should be coming from him! It's so unusual, and I think that's what I love about them.

for an original new waver & alternative rocker (back when it was actually ALTERNATIVE), i love the editors.

their music is rich & layered; their lyrics are heart-felt prose. overall, brilliant.

the joy division comparison is far too overplayed. consider depeche mode instead. for the younger fans of panic! at the disco, franz ferdinand, the killers, the bravery, et. all., you owe it to yourself to have a go at editors. it'll be 'love at first track,' i'm sure.

the lead singer's voice is emotionally husky & dark; reminds me of the guy in dead can dance. as for the musical structure, consider bel canto.

certainly hope they'll passby close enough for me to see them in concert. i believe they'll be as good live as they are in the studio.

La comparacion de Interpol con Joy Division se queda corta contra Editors y Joy Division e incluso con Interpol, aun así sigue teniendo todo ese estilo del Indie que me encanta...Saludos.

PD.Que tal She Wants Revenge contra Joy Division?
