Free Download: Panic! At The Disco "I Write Sins Not Tragedies"
This week is a Panic! week for me. I interviewed singer Brendon Urie of Panic! At The Disco, I'm going to see the band in concert tonight and I'm hosting an exclusive new track from their debut "A Fever You Can't Sweat Out" today. The Las Vegas five piece is rapidly gaining momentum with a national tour, a hit single in Europe and support from Fall Out Boys' Pete Wentz who signed the group to his Decaydance label.
Inspired by Freddie Mercury, Paul Oakenfold and The Smiths, Panic! At
The Disco serves up an infectious brew of dance, pop and indie rock
with some pretty interesting lyrics. Avoiding the trivial
love-gone-sour lyrics, Panic! takes ideas from literary authors like Chuck Palahniuk ("Fight Club," "Survivor") to create song stories that are somewhat absurd and bizarre at times.
Given the fact that these guys are only eighteen and nineteen years old, I'm
impressed with their musical abilities and production skills. They have
found a clever way to incorporate synths and electro beats into their
music without sounding like a Bravery or Killers rip-off. In fact, I
think Panic!'s music packs a lot more dance energy that these two bands. They also experiment with different song structures including alternate bridges before and after the chorus, which makes their music fun and not entirely predictable.
"I Write Sins Not Tragedies" is Panic! At The Disco's new
single that (compared to other tracks) does not feature any obvious electro influences but is still very danceable. The song tells a story of betrayal, rumors, lies and deception
in quite a dramatic fashion. If you have moment, go to iTunes and also check
out the band's "Nails for Breakfast, Tacks for Snacks" (it is Duran
Duran all over again), "Time To Dance" (with that cutesy synth riff)
and the short "Intermission" that includes a straight up trance dance
intro that will surprise you from this band. (A big thank you to Panic!'s management for allowing me to post this mp3 file!)

Panic! At the Disco mixes innovated technical sounds and colorful lyrics to create a smooth, phenomenal blend of music. They are geniuses and they are not even old enough to drink. All the power to them.
