Goldfrapp Live in NYC

Allisong1 Allisong2_1

This week, Goldfrapp is meeting with the North American press to promote the release of their third album "Supernature" in the U.S. in March 2006. As part of the activities, the group played a showcase at Nokia Theatre in the MTV building on Times Square last night.

The show was attended by fans, reporters, record company executives and New York artistocrats, including Fischerspooner's Casey Spooner, Heatherette's Richie Rich, GENRE's John Polly, Gawker's Jessica Coen, Thomas Ornato, Aimee Philips and many others.

Goldfrapp's gig ran about an hour or so. They not only featured songs from the new album (the brilliant "Ride On A White Horse," "Satin Chic," "Oh La La," "Number One") but also some of their previous hits such as "Train" and "Black Cherry." Click here to get the entire set list. Alison appeared on stage in a tight, blue jumpsuit with straight hair and thick red and blue make-up. She fronted a four piece band and two dancers who appeared in various artsy outfits. She told me earlier that the budget only allowed two dancers. She wanted four.

The group's sold-out performance was slick and Alison vocals were pristine and fully in tune. In fact, everything about the concert appeared perfectly on track. However, during the show I started to wonder if she was really connecting with the people in the room (a few hundred). The crowd was not singing along or responding to Alison's theatrics. It was if they were just sitting back, evaluating what this Brit phenomenon was all about.

One of the big issues might have been that a large majority of the audience has not heard the full new record yet. It must have been hard for Alison to feel her energy bounce back from the crowd. So, let's give them the benefit of a little doubt that some might feel of what the band can achieve here in the U.S.. It is still early and at least there were plenty of heads bobbing to the band's grinding disco sounds. If you were in the crowd and enjoyed Goldfrapp's live show, you can download some of their U.K. gigs on LiveHereNow.

More Goldfrapp to follow later, including some answers to your questions. (Photos via WireImage.)

It was a dumb move by their record company to delay the release of the new Goldfrapp album in the US... especially when anyone can download it now with a little searching.

I would think any fans there havbe it already, either legally or not. Could it have been the suits there? Industry crowds dont' give a hit, though they should have perked up for this one.

There's no question that Goldfrapp's record company dropped the ball with the "Supernature" release. As a fan I find it incredibly frustrating that if I follow my instincts and run out and buy the import then the band looses domestic sales, but why should I wait over half a year to own the album?

I did import the cd, but i do plan to buy a copy of the american edition. And possibly give away my copy of the UK edition to someone else, which would help spread the music further.

I'm hoping they'll be succesfull in the States, but if they won't, who cares, then there's more for Europe ;-)

The delay is probably due to the general American music industry being more concerned with the Hillary/Lindsey/Ashley variety of "artists" and don't know what to do with a true talent such as Goldfrapp. American radio is so radically different than the rest of the world's listening tastes. Marketing Goldfrapp to the TRL generation might be something the American label doesn't want to deal with. Argh! Goldfrapp is awesome and I hope they get some success in the states.
