Sizzling Sisters (Jake Shears Interview)

scissorsisters_group (Jake Shears is second from the right) The first time I called Jake Shears for our interview I caught him preparing for a television interview with MTV Europe. He politely asked me if I could call him back another time. "What day is today?," he asked. I told him it was Saturday and that I could call him back the day after. "Oh that would so much better. Oh wait, I'm on a plane somewhere. Not sure when, but you might have to try it a few times. What time zone are you?" Welcome to the life of a rising rock star - hectic, intense and impossible to plan. Especially now that Scissor Sisters is topping the charts in Europe and is on the verge of a major breakthrough in the U.S. Jake Shears, the flamboyant gay lead singer of Scissor Sisters, takes the pressures of being a rock star in stride when he talks about shuttling between his home in New York and the UK where the band has been burning up the charts. "Life has been very intense the last few months, but that's because we're totally brilliant" Shears smirks from his tour bus. "Jetlag hasn't been affecting me that much, but I've definitely been living an early-bird life." The anticipation about the band's success in the U.S. is mounting, but Shears tries to keep two feet on the ground. "Our success in the UK has been so over the top that I'm not really worried about what is going to happen in the States," he says. "We're very excited that the record has come out and we look forward to our U.S. tour in the fall. It has been fun and we don't take anything for granted."

The sound of Scissor Sisters on their self-titled debut album can be described as Elton John meets Pink Floyd meets Fischerspooner. Their genre-defying music is catching on with both regular music lovers and their peers. The band has already collaborated with some of its own heroes, including Duran Duran, Elton John, The B-52s and the Pet Shop Boys. "These were incredible experiences for us," says Shears. "It is all like a dream come true." Inspired by The B-52s and rockers like Richard O'Brien (the man behind "The Rocky Horry Picture Show"), the band's music was born out of having pleasure just playing and jamming explains Shears. "It was all about our own satisfaction," he says. "There was no big idea. Our sound came about totally naturally." Jake Shears is openly gay as are some of the other group's members. "I never made a conscious decision to be out or not. This is just who I am," he says. "It is funny because people always ask me the gay question, but in Europe nobody cares. It is all about the music and performance. I hope that people will see us as a rock and roll band, not a queer band." He feels that his homosexuality might be an obstacle in the U.S. "I just hope that we're embraced at home like we were in Europe," he says. "Our music speaks to everybody. It could happen that people might end up not giving a shit." Wal-Mart, the largest music retailer in the US, does seem to care. The company has decided to ban the Scissor Sisters album from it shelves when it was released late July. "I think it is a little bit scary and hypocritical," Shears says. "You can buy violent games like Manhunt for your PlayStation, but can't buy music at Wal-Mart with the word 'shit' in it." The group does not feel obligated to edit their music for its mature content. Their song "Return to Oz" has a particular dark meaning and relevance to the gay community. Its lyrics deal with the effects of crystal meth addiction. Shears agrees that the drug has a devastating impact on some, but is coy about making any additional statements about the song. "I hate to dissect my lyrics," he explains. "I write about what is going on around me and my life. It is just a feeling. People can interpret lyrics in a lot of different ways." Shears is also quickly becoming a rock and roll sex symbol across the pond with his theatrical antics often showing off his tight upper body. The constant travelling does not seem to wear on the singer's physique. "No, it is not a low-carb diet that keeps me in shape," he laughs. "Jumping around every night on stage is the best work-out."

OMG i watched scissor sisters at the brits and live 8 and they totally rocked! I am a straight female young teenager and they have opened up a whole new world to me! The energy Jake Shears has is infectious and he and ana matronic deffinatly have chemistry together on stage. I have their album too and it's totally amazing! I was suspicous about Jake's being gay until now, but i know that that doesn't matter. He is fantastic and thats all that matters. Jake is right, you shouldn't dissect the lyrics, it's for the people to work out for themselves. If someones gay, they are gay, it doesn't mean they are a criminal. All homophobics suck!!!
Loadsa n loadsa luv to all the band members (if they ever get to read this, which i doubt :-( ) from Hannah -xx-xx-

THEY ARE BLOODY BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

::sigh:: I wish some people would just see that Gays and Lesbians aren't bad, they are just what they are. Think about it: if we were born liking the same sex then there was a group of people who liked the opposite sex, we would call them "Queer". Homophobic people just judge people that are different. I know quite a few homophobes who don't like black people, just because their different. Why don't you think about it for a little while, ok? What if you were one of them?

I am a 53 year old bi married guy and wish these folks had been around when I was 19, maybe I would have enjoyed myself more and been wlling to come out. I had a 15 year old kid helping me this summer, doing some construction, he absolutely went nuts when he found the CD and we played it at least 20 times untl I wore it out and had to buy myself another and I gave him one, too! Jake and the gang are very, very talented. The cd is fabulous.

I've been watching some of SS's music videos on LOGO lately - since LOGO popped up on my satellite TV provider anyway. Let me first say that I am a 51 year old gay man with musical tastes that run from Bach to the Stones to the sound track from "Chocolat". I love what I've heard so far! It's too bad that they had to break out in England first, but with GW in office for round 2 (oh, I'm gonna be sick again, will someone please hold my head?), it doesn't surprise me.

After reading a few things online here and at other sites, I'm definitely going to hit amazon.com shortly and snap up a few of their CDs. I want to help them make it here and if they ever make to this little God foresaken city of Salt Lake (yes! I meant what I said), I'll definitely snatch up some tickets. I'll start mouthing off about them to my friends starting TODAY.

Oh, but I have to say that the cute, well-built, apparently well-hung, nasty acting, flamboyant, flirtatious, hopefully trampy lead singer does nothing to help the band's image - just kidding! Initially, HE was the ONLY REASON I stayed tuned in, but then the music hooked me. YumYum!

I'll bet GW listens to their music when he's all alone and there is no one around to know he's listening to music with gay band members and nasty lyrics! Oh, BTW, Wal-Fart, does that to all media it deems inappropriate.

What a great band!!!!! I had heard them before, but I was listening to "Mary" last week and it has me friggin hooked. Jake Shears is absolutley HOT. I am a straight 19 year old female, and I have loads of gay friends. Homophobic people are just pig-headed, ignorant and idiotic. What Ashleigh is saying is absolutley spot on, people fear what they don't know or don't understand. But that is not the point, Scissor Sisters are a great band, 3 of 5 of the members are gay, so? Bottom line: they are a great band, and I wish them all the best of luck.

PS. Jake Shears is damn fit:)

Walmart didn't single out the Scissor Sisters, it won't sell any music that carries the label "Explicit Language". However, they have no problem selling video games to minors that depict intense violence. I was shocked to see what disgusting, violent video games my eleven year old son bought from Walmart. I guess video games with rape, murder, and so on are fine as long as you don't say any naughty words! So hypocritical! I am proud to say I have never shopped at Walmart and never will.

Posted by: Dan at Oct 1, 2006 1:17:26 PM

I saw the Sisters last week in concert not knowing what to expect and I was blown away. I am buying both albums immediately and if Walmart doesn't want my money they can kiss my A@@!

The Scissor Sisters are very very addicting. For many months now, I play them at my desk in work, in the car on the way to work and at the gym.

Not only are they all very talented but Jake is just *SO* gorgeous. Mmm, score one for us gay guys ;)

Thank the universe for iPOD. I can watch his sexy body any time, any where I want now. (grin)
