I just received the incredible new album artwork for Björk's new CD "Medulla," which hits stores on August 31. The cryptic title of the record refers to "the inner or deep part of an animal or plant structure." This is the Icelandic singer's eleventh studio effort and once again she collaborated with an eclectic group of visual artists to create an innovative look and feel for the album.

The photography was shot in June by two European teams of visual artists: Mathias Augustyniak & Michaël Amzalag from Germany, and Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin from The Netherlands. The Dutch duo has an impressive resume that includes fashion photography for Giorgio Armani and Louis Vuitton. Björk's digitized hair art for the "Medulla" photography is courtesy of Shoplifter.

You might notice that the title of the album is subtly spelled out in the black jewelry Björk is wearing around her neck in the photo.

Van Lamsweerde and Matadin previously directed Björk's video for "Hidden Place" (video link) that was the first single of the singer's 2001 "Vespertine" album.

For more information about Björk and to listen to tracks of "Medulla," visit this promotional microsite. Björk fans can pre-order "Medulla" on her record label's web site (via Nicholas). I have not been able to confirm that the album will be shipped to you before the formal release date.

While she may be unconventional, björk rarely disappoints in delivering a creative album that pushes boundaries. Homogenic blew me away, for instance. From the futuristic cover art to the lush, sonic landscapes of Bachelorette or Joga.

I look forward to Medulla. Thanks for the sneak peek at the artwork.

Hum ... there are several sites where you can stream the whole album ... the european and (latin) american MTV websites have specials on Miss B and her album. Her first single/video, "Oceania" is already being played on US MTV ...
